Arriving on site: Caravan Water System

How do caravan water systems work? Filling your caravan’s water system from an Aquaroll is a straightforward process when tackled in the correct order. It allows you to use the taps, shower, and hot water from your Truma or ALDE hot water tank.

I’m sure most caravanners have made a faux pas after arriving on site, such as forgetting to close the yellow toggle switch before trying to fill the water system (I have!), so here’s how to avoid unnecessary trips to the water-filling point.

What to do when arriving on site

  • Ensure that all taps in your caravan (sink, basin, shower, etc.) are shut, and the yellow drain-down valve is closed. It’s closed when the switch is in a horizontal position. This yellow valve can be found next to the water heater unit, usually under the front bunk.
  • Fill the Aquaroll from the water filling point (usually marked ‘Drinking Water’), place it alongside the water inlet point, attach the submersible water pump, and lower it into the Aquaroll. Fit the pipe-mounted dust cover over the opening.
  • Before using the water system, connect the waste water container or Wastemaster. Two grey-coloured outlets channel water from your sinks and shower.
  • Once everything is connected, go inside the caravan and open the hot tap in the kitchen.
  • Go to the control panel and turn the pump switch to ‘On’.
  • Wait until you have a steady flow of water. This can take a while as the hot water system will fill the water heater tank first.
  • Once the hot water is flowing freely, open the cold tap. Do this slowly, as a build-up of air is likely.
  • Repeat this with the other taps in the caravan.
  • Your water system is ready to use.

What to do before heading home

  • When it’s time to go home, turn off the water pump on the control panel, disconnect the submersible pump, and empty your Aquaroll at the water disposal point.
  • Inside the caravan, open the yellow drain valve (vertical position) and all taps, including the shower. Ensure that the tap is in the middle position, allowing both hot and cold feeds to remain open. This will drain water from the system.
  • Disconnect the waste water hoses and empty your waste water tank at the water disposal point.
