What’s the best 4 berth campervan? Pros & cons

If you’ve been thinking about taking life on the road, whether for weekends away, family holidays or longer adventures, a 4 berth campervan often feels like the sweet spot. It’s compact enough to handle on the roads with relative ease, but roomy enough to live comfortably.

The appeal of a 4 berth campervan is simple because you get:

  • Four sleeping spaces, with the option of single, double and pop-top beds
  • Everything you need to live on board, with a lounge, kitchen and washroom
  • An ability to go off-grid while having a way to store and generate electricity for everyone

In this guide, we’ll explore 4 berth campervan pros and cons in general, and then take a closer look at how our latest 4 berth campervan models are designed to make your life on the road feel effortless.

What is a 4 Berth campervan?

A 4 berth campervan is a campervan designed to sleep four people. A “berth” simply means a dedicated sleeping space.

In most cases, a 4 berth campervan is ideal for:

  • A couple travelling with two children, extra family members or two friends
  • Grandparents travelling with grandchildren
  • Couples who want separate sleeping areas for flexibility

Be aware that a campervan’s “berth” only refers to the number of people it can sleep.

If you want to find out how many people a campervan can safely seat when it’s moving, you need to look at the number of ‘travelling seats’. These are seats fitted with seatbelts and legally approved for use when you’re driving on roads.

In some instances (like the Bailey Endurance E65), the number of “berths” a campervan has can be different to the number of “travel seats”.

Layouts of 4 berth campervans vary. Some have a rear bed and a convertible lounge, while others use a pop-top to create flexible sleeping areas without wasting living space.

That’s what makes this setup so versatile. You get the practicality of a van that still fits on most driveways, with the comfort and capability for longer trips that feel more like a proper holiday than a weekend away.

Campervan pros & considerations

Pros
  • Manoeuvrability: Campervans are designed to feel manageable when you’re driving on country roads or within town centres alike. For example, the Bailey Endeavour & Endurance models are 5.98m long, built on the Ford Transit base.
  • Flexible sleeping options: Ideal for families, couples who like extra space or anyone who occasionally travels with friends.
  • A true home on wheels: Many 4 berth models include a full kitchen, complete washroom and proper storage space.
  • Comfortable living area: You can cook, relax and sleep without feeling cramped.
  • Small enough for daily use: These campervans are built on the platform of everyday vans, like a Ford Transit, so they can be used as your everyday vehicle.
Considerations
  • Needs more concentration when driving: If using as a daily vehicle, it takes a little more care to park and manoeuvre when using for things like grocery shopping compared to a car.
  • Daily setup time: If you’re converting the lounge into a bed each night, it can take a few minutes.
  • If you’re living in your campervan full-time for an extended trip, you might sometimes feel the need for a little extra space. If you are planning longer trips of several weeks to months of living in a van, you might also want to consider a Bailey motorhome and trade a smaller space for something a little more expansive for long term living.

These are all fair trade-offs. However, with the right layout and features, you can find a van that will work for you that you and your family will love. With over 75 years of making recreational vehicles, that’s where our expertise at Bailey allows our campervan designs to really shine.

Meet Bailey’s 4 berth campervans

Every Bailey we ever create is built to make life simpler on the road.

If you’re looking for a Bailey 4 berth campervan, there are two ways to achieve it within our campervan range:

  • Choose a dedicated 4 berth model in the Endeavour range
  • Upgrade a 2 or 4 berth model in the Endurance range with the optional Adventure Pack and TentBox

All models referenced below have an MTPLM of 3500kg, meaning they can be driven on a standard Category B driving licence.

The Bailey Endeavour range: Dedicated 4 berth campervans

The Endeavour B64 and Endeavour B65 are purpose-built 4 berth campervans. Both are compact 6-metre models built on the Ford Transit and designed to sleep four people comfortably.

Endeavour B65
  • Raised rear transverse fold-away double bed
  • Additional double bed in the pop-top roof
  • Front dinette with four designated travelling seats

This layout provides clear separation between sleeping areas. The rear double has it’s own dedicated space, while the pop-top creates a second high-level bed. It works particularly well for families who prefer defined sleeping zones.

Endeavour B64
  • Front Flexi Lounge with Aguti travel seats
  • Lounge converts into twin single beds or a full-width double
  • Additional double bed in the pop-top roof

In this layout, the main lower bed is created from the front lounge, keeping the rear of the campervan dedicated to the kitchen and washroom. It’s a flexible option if you prefer a bit more lounge space for socialising and relaxing during the day.

The Bailey Endurance range: 2 berth models with 4 berth capability

Both models in the Endurance range are 2 berth campervans as standard, but can be converted into a practical 4 berth layout.

  • Rear lounge that converts into a double bed
  • Two designated travelling seats

The E62 is ideal for couples who need more flexibility with their interior living space. The huge rear lounge gives you seating for 4-6 people, and an adjustable multi-position table makes it easy for you to use your campervan as a travelling work station.

Endurance E65
  • Raised rear transverse double bed with under-bed storage
  • Four designated travelling seats

The E65 offers more space up front, with all of your comforts like a lounge, kitchen and bathroom within the first ¾ of the vehicle. This leaves a more private space for your bed, which you could leave up constantly if you prefer.

However, where this model really shines is when you do fold the rear bed away to reveal a rear garage with metal lashing points on its floor. It’s perfect for bringing outdoor gear with you and safety stowing it for travel.

How to convert an Endurance campervan into a 4 berth

Both the Endurance E62 and Endurance E64 can be upgraded with the optional Adventure Pack.

The Adventure Pack includes off-road styling features such as a roof rack, ladder, roof-mounted lighting and solar panels. It also enables the fitment of a rooftop TentBox, creating a high-level double bed above the vehicle.

Adding a TentBox effectively transforms either Endurance model from a 2 berth into a 4 berth campervan, without altering the internal floorplan.

This makes the Endurance range a flexible choice for couples who usually travel as two but occasionally want to bring children or guests along, adding an extra sleeping space without permanently reducing the space you have free inside the van.

Why you’ll feel at home in a Bailey campervan

1. Living space that adapts to you

Choosing a campervan that will take you seamlessly from daytime to nighttime makes travel easier and more pleasant. We’ve designed our 4-berth layouts to be flexible and convenient for every trip you want to take.

The front lounge of the Bailey Endeavour B64

The Endeavour B64 and B65 both feature a front lounge that contains travel seats. The B64 travel seats fold into two sofas and the B65 has a dinette with wall-mounted table.

At the rear of the B64 is the kitchen and washroom, while at the rear of the B65 is a fold-down double bed with the kitchen and washroom located in the centre.

The travel seat / sofa combo in the B64 creates two single beds at night.

Many of our Ford motorhomes and campervans have Aguti travel seats including the 4 berth B64 Endeavour campervan. These are folding travel seats designed for motorhomes and campervan conversions.

The Aguti travel seats form part of the front Flexi-lounge. In lounge mode, the seats are folded away underneath the lounge seating, giving you a comfortable sofa-style seat to relax on. Then when travelling, the Aguti seats fold back up ready for use, including seatbelts, dedicated travel seat cushions and ISOFIX.

Look out for the Flexi-lounge in models across the Adamo, Alora and Endeavour ranges.

In both campervans, a pop-top double bed adds two more sleeping spaces without increasing either vehicle’s footprint. It’s perfect for guests or family, and keeps the interior feeling light and airy.

At 1.96 metres high inside (excluding the pop-top) and just over eight feet wide, there’s room to move comfortably. It means you can enjoy that feeling of proper “living space” as you move about inside the vehicle.

2. Kitchens built for real meals

When you’re travelling in a campervan you want to have all the facilities that make life on the road fun and enjoyable. This includes having a kitchen that will give you enough space to prep and cook, a fridge with enough space for all you need, an oven and hob and a kitchen sink. With a Bailey campervan cooking on the road can feel just like home.

The Endeavour and Endurance both come fully equipped as standard, with Thetford combination oven, grill and hob, fridge and a sink.

In some models, you’ll get a drop-down or fold-out worktop extension that increases your prep space, while in every model, durable surfaces and task lighting make cooking on the road as simple as it is at home.

3. Comfort in any climate

All Bailey campervans are tested to extremes: from -15°C cold-chamber tests to real life testing in Saharan desert heat, they’re genuinely capable of dealing with anything the UK (or European) weather wants to bring your way.

We took an Endeavour campervan to the Sahara and an Endurance campervan to the Spanish desert to see how they would perform in real-world conditions. And during testing for the Endeavour range, we tested the Ford Transit body that both campervan ranges are based on down to -15°C.

The Truma Diesel Combi D4E heating system keeps the interior warm and the water hot even in freezing conditions, and the cab has air conditioning to keep you even more in control of the temperature all year round.

Staying comfortable on the road shouldn’t be a full-time job and with the work Bailey has put in to making these campervans comfortable under all conditions, you can enjoy your van life wherever you choose to travel to.

4. Storage that accommodates your life

Ask any campervan owner and they’ll tell you that clutter can build up fast. Shoes, jackets, cables, cookware, it all needs a home. The storage design in our campervans is shaped around real life on the road, making sure there’s a place for everything.

When designing our campervans, our creators make use of under-bed storage, overhead lockers and wide rear garages to give you more than enough space to keep everything organised.

In the Endeavour B64 and B65, you’ll find built-in overhead storage lockers, cubby holes for smaller items and kitchen and washroom storage.

The Endurance range models take it further, with the option of a Rhino roof rack and ladder as part of the Adventure Pack, which is ideal for surfboards or extra kit, plus the ability to fit a TentBox rooftop bed for even more sleeping flexibility.

5. Off-Grid Capability

Another challenge with smaller campers is the trade-off between independence and convenience. Go too small, and you rely on campsites for facilities. Go too big, and you may not be able to access some of the more out-of-the-way places that will only accommodate smaller vans..

Optional Swamper tyres on the Endurance E65

We’ve built our campervans to give you independence. With solar power, diesel heating and efficient appliances, you can stay off-grid for days at a time should you wish.

Use websites like Britstops which give you a network of farm shops, pubs, vineyards and attractions that allow overnight stopping for motorhomes and campervans and Park4Night to find campsites, farms and pubs for overnight stays as well as useful facilities like water, laundrettes and food shops.

A solar panel on the Bailey Endeavour B65

Despite their capability, our campervans remain easy to drive. At just under six metres long, both the Endeavour and Endurance handle much like a large car, with Ford’s 165 bhp engine and optional 8-speed automatic gearbox making light work of both motorways and rural roads.

Add reversing cameras, parking sensors, and all-weather tyres (on the Endurance), and you get a vehicle that’s just as suited to city breaks as wild camping.

6. A calming space to come back to

Many campervans can feel utilitarian. As in practical, but not particularly relaxing. At Bailey, we believe your van should feel like somewhere you want to spend time and not just somewhere you sleep.

The living space in the Bailey Endurance E65

Inside, the interiors of our campervans are made to feel more like a home than a van. You’ll notice soft ambient lighting, tactile materials and thoughtful touches throughout, from matte black and chrome fixtures to comfortable seating fabrics designed for real use.

The optional Avtex Wi-Fi system give you a way to use your downtime how you wish, whether you’re streaming music, catching up on work or simply relaxing after a day’s exploring. It’s these touches that make the difference between a space you stay in and one you actually live in.

7. Compact washrooms that feel anything but
The washroom in the Bailey Endurance E65

Across the Endeavour and Endurance ranges, you’ll find full washrooms that include a shower, basin and toilet, so you can keep yourself feeling well taken care of on the road.

The heating system supplies consistent hot water for showers or washing up, even when you’re off-grid. Combined with attractive finishes and plenty of storage, it means you can enjoy the comfort of a proper bathroom without worrying about lack of facilities or cramped layouts.

Proof that small doesn’t have to mean basic. Bailey’s washrooms are designed to fit into how you like to live.

Who a 4 Berth campervan is best for

  • Couples who value extra living and storage space.
  • Families with young children or teens who want separate sleeping areas.
  • Retired travellers looking for a compact yet comfortable vehicle for long touring holidays.
  • Adventure seekers who like to carry outdoor gear or travel off-grid.
  • Upgraders moving from caravans or smaller campervans who want more convenience without the size of a full motorhome.

In short, it suits anyone who wants the freedom of van life with enough room to relax.

Choose your new home away from home

Every 4 berth campervan offers a balance between space and simplicity, but the best ones go further. Bailey’s approach to design means you get the comfort, insulation and attention to detail usually found in larger motorhomes, wrapped up in something easy to drive and ready for anything.

Whether you’re chasing new road trips, looking for a practical family setup, or planning to live on the road full time, a 4 berth campervan offers the perfect blend of comfort, capability and independence.

Discover the Bailey Endeavour and Endurance ranges, and find your version of freedom wherever the road takes you.
